1
Measure wall-to-wall, not cabinet-to-cabinet
Always measure the full space available, even if cabinets won’t fill it entirely.
- Measure from wall to wall, not existing cabinets
- Take measurements at floor, bench, and wall height
- Walls are rarely perfectly straight
Tip: Always use the smallest measurement when planning cabinet runs.
-
2
Measure multiple times to confirm accuracy
Even small measuring errors can cause installation problems later.
- Measure each dimension at least twice
- Write measurements down immediately
- Don’t rely on memory
Tip: A 5mm mistake on paper can become a major problem during installation.

3
Check ceiling height and bulkheads
Ceiling height affects tall cabinets, wardrobes, and wall cabinets.
- Measure floor to ceiling height
- Check for bulkheads or lowered ceilings
- Measure at multiple points
Tip: Ceiling height often varies across the room.
-
4
Measure around obstacles
Make note of anything that affects cabinet placement.
- Power points
- Windows and window sills
- Pipes and plumbing
- Switches and vents
Tip: Even small obstacles can affect cabinet fit and layout.
-
5
Allow space for appliances
Appliances require correct clearances to fit and function properly.
- Measure appliance width, depth, and height
- Allow extra space for hoses and cables
- Check door swing clearance
Tip: Always use appliance manufacturer dimensions when possible.
-
6
Check floor level
Floors are often not perfectly level, which affects cabinet installation.
- Check high and low points
- Measure floor to ceiling at several locations
- A marble or round object is a quick and easy way to check if the floor is level.
Tip: Even new homes can have uneven floors.
-
7
Measure depth as well as width
Depth is just as important as width when planning cabinets.
- Measure from wall to front of obstacles
- Check door and walkway clearances
- Ensure enough room for movement
Tip: Don’t forget depth – it affects how the room feels and functions.
-
8
When in doubt, leave a small allowance
Small allowances make installation easier and safer.
- Rooms are rarely perfectly square
- Fillers can cover small gaps
- A tight fit is harder to install than a slightly smaller fit
Tip: Installers can fill small gaps but they can’t shrink cabinets.
