1
Always allow the correct overhang
Your benchtop should slightly overhang your cabinets. This protects cabinet faces and gives the kitchen a clean, finished look.
- Typical overhang is around 15mm on the front of your cabinets (for example, a 585mm deep cabinet should have a 600mm deep benchtop)
- Overhangs on the ends of a benchtop after a run of cabinet are usually between 15-20mm
- Helps prevent water running down onto cabinet doors
- Creates a more premium, intentional appearance

Tip: Too little overhang makes the kitchen look unfinished. Too much can interfere with handles and movement.

2
Edge all exposed sides (this is critical)
Any exposed edge should be clashed to prevent moisture entering the substrate.
- Essential for durability, especially near sinks
- Prevents swelling or damage over time
- Small cost increase, huge lifespan increase

3
Plan joins carefully
Where possible, double check the join placements in your plans and try to keep these away from water and heat sources to prevent any possible future damage.

Tip: Joins cannot be placed through a 'breakfast bar' piece of benchtop so make sure you consider this when planning your kitchen layout.

Working out overhangs for a breakfast bar
We have two depth options available for breakfast bar tops: 650mm or 900mm. These are the only substrates we stock with a rolled edge on both the front and back.
When you are planning a breakfast bar, it's important to work out the overhang amount so that you can add this to your returning measurements and ensure everything is positioned correctly.

Waterproofing is essential around sinks
Sink areas are the highest moisture zone in the entire kitchen.
- Make sure all cut-outs are sealed properly
- Ensure silicone and waterproofing is applied correctly
- Use an experienced installer

Tip: You can purchase paint-on acrylic waterproof coating at most hardware stores, this will provide your benchtop with an additional layer of protection.
-
6
Choose colours that work with your cabinets
Your benchtop colour has a huge impact on the overall feel.
- Lighter tops feel clean and modern
- Woodgrain tops add warmth
- Contrast creates visual interest

Tip: Samples help you visualise the final result.

7
Make sure cabinets are installed level first
Your benchtop is only as good as what it sits on.
- Uneven cabinets cause poor fit
- Can cause gaps and stress points
- Professional installation is highly recommended

Tip: Always install cabinets correctly before measuring benchtops.
